injectable-guide-teaserInjectable treatments such as neurotoxins (commonly just known as “Botox”) and dermal fillers are becoming more and more popular as introductory and maintenance anti-aging treatments. We get lots of questions about Botox, Restylane, Voluma, Dysport, and Juvederm in our Nashville plastic surgery practice as these treatments become more commonplace. Our Definitive Guide to Injectable Treatments will set the record straight about your options for aging gracefully.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Not all injectors are MD’s who are adequately trained to perform cosmetic injections. Some injectors can be aestheticians only licensed to perform facials, chemical peels and waxing, but may not have learned the anatomy and physiology of the face and the structures beneath the skin. Other people offering injectable treatments may be nurses or physicians who have learned anatomy and physiology, but unless the physician is a board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist, it may have been many years since they have studied the structures of the face. Dr. Michael Burgdorf has a saying- “Anyone can find a line or wrinkle and stick it—but by not knowing the precise location of what’s underneath, and its specific function, trouble is often found.” Many times, those without the proper training will be at a loss of how to properly treat this.  Do your research and be sure to choose an injector who has received the proper training necessary to ensure the best possible outcome.

DECIDE WHICH TREATMENT IS FOR YOU

There are different types of injectable treatments which are designed to address different concerns. A very common phone call in our Nashville plastic surgery office is from patients who want to find out which non-surgical treatment option is right for them.

“BOTOX”

Neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport work to temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause fine lines to form. Typical facial expressions such as laughing, smiling, frowning and furrowing the brows can lead to crow’s feet, forehead lines and those pesky 11’s between the brows. Botox and Dysport can soften those lines and help to prevent them from becoming deeper wrinkles that require more aggressive treatment. Botox and Dysport typically last about 3-4 months, although some patients experience longer-lasting or shorter-lived results.

FILLER

The most common Injectable Treatments fillers are Restylane, Juvederm and Voluma, all of which are hyaluronic acid based gels. Hyaluronic acid fillers help to restore volume that is lost in the aging process. Fillers are designed to treat laugh lines, marionette lines, nasolabial folds, lips, and even mild jowling. Most fillers last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the filler and the location of injection.

THINK OF IT AS A BEAUTY REGIMEN

“Botox” and fillers are not a one-time Injectable Treatments. We like to think of this as a schedule like getting your hair highlighted or your nails done. A typical Botox schedule is one treatment every 3-4 months. Dermal fillers have been shown to have the longest lasting results with a touch-up treatment 3-6 months after initial treatment.

SCHEDULE TIME BETWEEN TREATMENT AND EVENTS

While there isn’t necessarily downtime with “Botox” and fillers, it is a good idea to schedule time between your treatment and a big event. Botox and Dysport can take 5-7 days to fully take effect, so it’s best to have “Botox” at least one week prior to your special engagement. Some patients experience slight bruising or temporary swelling with filler treatment, so we recommend filler at least two weeks before your planned affair to allow for successful resolution of any side effects you may experience. Once you’ve had a few Injectable Treatments, you will know how your body reacts and may be able to narrow the timeframe in the future.
