With Memorial Day approaching, I started thinking about this great nation and how I can try to support the business within it. As a consumer, I can choose products that are made in the USA –  like locally grown fruits and vegetables. In addition, I can avoid items from Mexico and Venezuela, drinking California wine instead of French or Italian wine, wearing clothes that were made in the USA, etc.

Plus, as a business owner,  I can choose products that are made in the United States.Unfortunately many of the precision surgical instruments I use on a daily basis are made overseas and purchased by the hospital. However, I do have a choice in which breast implants I use and I choose to go with the company that manufactures the breast implants right here in the United States of America – Mentor. Mentor’s headquarters are located in Dallas and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit their manufacturing plant. I was impressed with the high level of control, sterility and safety at this plant. While much of the breast implant manufacturing process is automated and standardized with machines, thereby removing the “human error” element, they employ a bevy of people. In fact, for the newer form stable implants, the “gummy bears”, human hands are required to perform the specialized hand-made texturing process. Mentor has increased its human work force in order to meet the rising demand of popularity of these breast implants.

Like many other quality products produced in the U.S., the breast implants manufactured by Mentor are eligible for a warranty. Mentor offers a lifetime warranty against manufacturing error and an additional 10 year warranty covering a known complication of breast augmentation surgery, a capsular contracture. This warranty allows consumers and doctors alike to feel confident in the product they are choosing, knowing that an American company stands by their craftsmanship. As a plastic surgeon and an American, I proud to be able to offer my patients quality breast implants made in the United States of America.
