Earlobe Reconstruction
Enjoy Exceptional Results
Many patients who come to Music City Plastic Surgery seek help for earlobes that have been damaged or enlarged due to ear gauging or trauma to the ear. Dr. Michael Burgdorf, our award-winning plastic surgeon, can also repair stretched earlobes that are the result of wearing heavy, dangling earrings. Earlobe repair or reduction procedures are typically not long or painful, and they often have short recovery periods. Types of Reconstruction
At our office, two general procedures for earlobe reconstruction surgery are used:
- Marginal Earlobe Excision – The removal of the excess skin on the lower margin of the earlobe. This creates a smaller earlobe, and scarring is restricted to the lower edge of the ear.
- Wedge Earlobe Excision – A triangular-shaped wedge of the earlobe is removed. This procedure creates a vertical scar on the earlobe.
Z Plasty
Z Plasty, a plastic surgery technique that was developed to improve the appearance of scars, is also often used as part of the process of earlobe reconstruction. Z Plasty involves reshaping and minimizing deep and high-tension scars to make them less noticeable. In correcting large holes such as those left as a result of gauging, Z Plasty, combined with Dr. Burgdorf’s other repair techniques, minimizes notching of the earlobe and results in a natural-looking ear.
Some patients who choose earlobe repair decide to have this procedure in conjunction with a facelift, as it lends an added positive aesthetic to the results, particularly in older patients.
