When Should I Start Botox Treatments?

Instagram. Snapchat. Facebook. Twitter. Welcome to “selfie culture,” a social-media-fueled phenomenon that has younger and younger generations today fixated on their appearance like never before. For preventive purposes, many are turning to cosmetic procedures such as Botox at ages previously unheard of, raising the question: how young is too young for Botox treatments?

The short answer is there are no age laws in the U.S. limiting who can get Botox and fillers, though any patient under age 18 requires parental consent. In my practice at Music City Plastic Surgery, I personally recommend starting no earlier than mid 20s, when pesky wrinkles and fine lines may first start to rear their ugly heads. But the long answer is a little more complicated—here’s what you need to know:

What is Botox?

Botox is botulinum toxin type A, the most widely used and most effective cosmetic injectable in the world, which temporarily suspends facial muscle movement to help smooth out overlying lines and wrinkles for results that last three-four months.* (Dysport is also a version of botulinum toxin type A treatment.)

Botox targets areas such as:

  • Frown lines
  • Lip lines
  • “Crow’s feet”
  • Forehead creases

The benefits of Botox

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there was a 797% rise in Botox procedures between 2000 and 2016, for a whopping 7,056,255 total treatments nationwide last year! Botox is popular for a reason, as it offers myriad benefits: it not only treats wrinkles and lines to give your appearance and self-confidence a boost, it can also stop and reduce sweating and is currently being tested to treat medical issues such as migraines and depression in some cases.

Many professionals today are turning to Botox to give them a leg up in their careers, and it’s an increasingly popular group activity for special occasions such as bridal and bachelorette parties, for couples, mother-daughter and BFF bonding dates.

When should you start Botox?

Just because you don’t think wrinkles are a problem yet, doesn’t mean you can’t reap the benefits of Botox! I recommend starting in your mid-20’s, just when those lines and wrinkles begin to appear when at rest, to help maintain a youthful appearance longer and ideally keep you from requiring as many cosmetic or plastic surgery procedures down the road. A little at a time for the long haul can help keep your skin looking fresh, preventing many wrinkles in the first place versus having to treat them later.

Who should administer Botox?

For the best results, always consult a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist for your Botox needs—not only for qualification reasons, but also for safety purposes. The FDA has recently found instances of doctors’ offices and medical clinics nationwide selling counterfeit versions of Botox, often purchased in order to increase profit margin. The potential contamination of these unregulated toxins puts patients’ lives at risk.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I took an oath of ethics and have the most stringent training, with an intimate understanding of anatomy, required to perform these procedures safely and effectively.
