The recently released American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual Statistics Report show an increase in labiaplasty procedures in 2016 by board certified plastic surgeons of 39% since the year prior. The rise in popularity of labiaplasty has been directly correlated with changes in grooming trends of the pubic region. With increased exposure of the genital region, and tighter fitting clothes, more women are noticing imperfections or asymmetries that they would like to correct. Sometimes the labia are enlarged from the lasting effect of pregnancy or weight fluctuations and sometimes women are just born with congenital asymmetries. Labiaplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Recovery is fairly quick and a women is able to resume most normal activities with a week or so, with the exception of sexual intercourse or tampon usage, which is usually delayed until 4-6 weeks after the operation. Labiaplasty can be a quick and fairly permanent solution to restore a more cosmetically appealing appearance of the labia. Additional pregnancy(ies) and/or drastic weight fluctuations may cause some swelling to return and may undo some of the surgical correction.
